High Hopes For Viewdata Launch

'Following the successful demonstration of its proposed Viewdata service last week, the Post Office has outlined its timetable for introduction of the service.'

So starts a story in the October 1st 1975 edition of Electronics Weekly.

The story continues:

'As announced in EW last week, a pilot trial is to start in January next year with public trials and market testing provisionally scheduled to begin in September 1977.'

'Subject to satisfactory trial the service will be made available to the general public in 1978.'

The story concludes:

'Provision will exist in the finalised system for the metering of the number of calls made for access to a particular page of information so that, depending on the nature of the information provider, a proportion of the revenue generated may be collected on his behalf.'
