'Computer Sales Reach Breakthrough'

is the headline in a story 50 years ago this year in the September 7th 1960 edition of Electronics Weekly.

The story starts:

'Sales of electronic computers for process control are reaching their 'breakthrough' point according to Mr Leon Bagrit, deputy chairman and managing director of  Elliott-Automation.

'Surveying the company's order book recently he said that the expansion of this specialised market had been 'steep and dramatic' with a current upswing in demand far greater than was e3xpected only a few months ago.

'The company have orders for 22 computers on hand of which nine are for process control in the electricity, gas, chemical and nuclear industries, and the business data processing market is also buoyant.'

'The greatest success is being achieved with the fully transistorised National-Elliott 803 for which orders have been received from the USA, Western Germany and Finland, in addition to the home market. There have also been orders for a number of 405s and 803s.'

'The current order book brings the total sales of National-Elliott digital computers to over $5 million.
