There is a possibility of debate over this, but extended recent research in America leads me to believe that the ten best cocktails are:
Vodkatini
Mai Tai
Mojito
Harvey Wallbanger
Sidecar
Old Fashioned
Sazerac
Margarita
Tom Collins

Vodkatini? Bah! This can only be because no-one makes decent dry martinis with gin - as God intended - these days, not even in SF (though I've not tried the place on Haight which supposedly enforces puritan standards).
Give me a dry martini with a grapefruit twist anyday; NO PITH ON THE TWIST (where most places fail - instant bitter poisoning of the drink), and NOT SHAKEN.
Modern multicoloured cough syrups! It's the thin end of the wedge etc...
The Baron
Bartenders tell me, The Baron, that the vodka-martini outsells the gin-martini 5 to 1. Justifiably IMHO.
The research assistant is duly embarrased!
It is of course well known that the best cocktail in the known universe is the Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster.
I'll hazard a cheeky guess that's because 5/6 people probably think that a martini is made exclusively with vodka because that's what James Bond told them.
So much more flavour compared to a vodkatini. Of course, you need a good gin without too much botanical perfumery going on. If you use Beefeater or - heaven forfend - Cadenhead's Old Radge (sic.) then you get what you deserve.
Thanks for that, The Baron, have never heard of this Cadenhead's stuff before but, having loooked it up since getting your comment, I'm going to try it. Maybe the list will need revision.
The snag with that, Mike, is finding a bar which stocks Ol' Janx Spirit, water from the seas of Santraginus V, Arcturan Mega-gin, Fallian marsh gas, Qalactin Hypermint extract, Algolian Suntiger teeth and Zamphuor.
Not forgetting gin and tonic I hope -- preferably Gordon's Export, Schweppes full-fat tonic, and lime not lemon :-)
Yes a fine drink, Ian, but I would venture to suggest that it doesn't really fall within the generally accepted definition of a 'cocktail'.
Hmm
No place for a 'red biddy' then David ?
According to my late uncle a west country concoction comprising 1 pint rough cider (e.g. Thatchers) smoothed out by the addition of a
schooner of port.
Sceppers
Crikey, Sceptic, pukeworthy or what?
