The Cows Of Gstaad

After IEF2009, the lovely Terri & I mosey up to Gstaad for lunch. Sitting in the sunshine outside a restaurant in the main street with a bottle of local Vaudois Pinot Noir-Gamay, we hear bells. Low, slow, mellow bells.

 

Blood-Sucking Females

On a BA plane I buy a solar powered mosquito repellent device. "Female mosquitoes normally bite during their spawning period, at this time they do not like being approached by male mosquitoes, so the repellent produces the same frequency of the male mosquito (around 5KHz - 9KHz) to repel the female mosquitoes," runs the accompanying description of the rather witty principle on which the device works.

Rowing down the Thames at the weekend I see a most amazing sight. A tern has made a nest inside an old tyre.

Don't Flash the Octopus

I never realized, until this week, that the Octopuses have a very delicate sense of propriety. In the aquarium at Monterey there are two magnificent Octopuses in tanks, side by side, surrounded by signs saying: 'Don't flash the Octopus'.
