Oops I started a war!

I suppose subconsciously – I wanted to court controversy but I didn’t realise I would start a war. My recent thoughts about the iPhone, invention and illogicality obviously struck a nerve with Eric Starkloff automatedtestblog.jpg
– friend and fellow blogger. “Let the Blog Wars begin!” he writes – thus proving my point about logic or lack of it where the iPhone is concerned.

Looks like my “Apple invented nothing” comment is really what got under Eric’s skin. OK – maybe that was a little harsh – but I stand by my opinion – not Invention of the Year but Gadget of the Year. Absolutely – the software, running on high performance (British-designed) processors, is what makes the iPhone. As a software-defined device at leading (even bleeding) edge of technology convergence – it points the direction in which mobile phones are going, and Apple’s ability to engage with consumers emotions make this a great V1.0 effort. But here’s where Eric’s parallel with automated test breaks down. In reality automated test is further along this evolution. Automated test architectures have been software-defined for some time. We are a long way past Automated Test V1.0. If what test engineers can do with software-defined test systems is any indication – the iPhone truly has a bright future.

So – are we at war? Or are we just 2 engineers who both love the iPhone, it’s just that one of us lives in a country where the high price conspires with functionality gaps to let logic beat love.
