This week I am going to talk about Cable Assembly Testing as recently we upgraded our Testing Facility with Cirris Signature CR Harness Test Equipment and it occurred to me that testing is an area we have not covered in much detail. So let's go ahead and put that right!
Most people are familiar with the usual testing for continuity, shorts, cross, and open connections however, so I am not going to cover that here (although I may well do in the future).
In this era of high performance high end manufacturing we need to know that Cable Assemblies work and work to the correct parameters so the devices using the cables work at their best possible performance levels.
So what are the specific advantages of the latest test equipment I hear you ask?
To give an example of this, say you have built a cable and put it on a traditional continuity test you know that the cable is wired correctly. However, let's suppose that the cable has a very specific insulation resistance value then - for good measure - add a resistor at one of the connectors...
There is no way your traditional tester can test for the cable performance. You have to use other methods or hope the cable works!
Here are a few examples (not an exhaustive list, by any means) of the wide range of tests the Cirris Tester can perform:
• Wire Resistance Range: 0.1 - 100K ohm
• Component Resistance Range: 1.0M ohm (max)
• Insulation Resistance Range: 500K ohm (max)
• Components: Resistors, Diodes, Capacitors, Four-wire resistors
If you are thinking this sort of test equipment is not cheap, you'd be right. But what makes some companies stand out is their constant investment in technology to be part of the top end of UK manufacturing, which is - in my opinion - the best in the world!
