Coming soon - the EuP Directive

The Energy-Using Products Directive establishes a framework for the setting of eco-design requirements in energy-using products. It aims to improve the environmental performance of products throughout their life cycle, by systematic integration of environmental considerations at an early stage in the product design. The clear objective is to cut energy use.

The Directive was finalised in July 2005 with detailed “implementing measures” to follow after studies, led by the European Commission, have been completed. Reporting is expected later in 2007 / 2008.

By encouraging manufacturers to design products with the environmental impact in mind throughout the entire life cycle, the EC accelerates the move towards improving the environmental performance of energy-using products.

There are no obligations for all energy-using products. Focus is on those meeting criteria such as “significant environmental impact” and large “volume of trade” and therefore providing clear potential for improvement.

Implementation measures must not have a “significant negative impact” on a products price or performance or indeed the competitiveness of EU industry.

One example of an approach could be a washing machine. Important aspects would include energy, water and detergent consumption, noise and recycling ability. Analysis will identify how to achieve a high level of environmental performance for the washing machine throughout its life cycle, while avoiding negative impacts, for example: using certain materials in the detergent should not lead to an increase in energy or water consumption.
