Test Equipment features in 3 Directives

It crossed my mind that test equipment is becoming a hot topic. Monitoring and Control Instruments are category 9 of the WEEE Directive and therefore do not fall within the scope of EU RoHS today.

However, with the review on scope of EU RoHS currently taking place and with proposed legislation in Norway and China all that could change.

Test equipment will probably fall within scope of EU RoHS from 2012, and test equipment that could be sold to Norwegian consumers is likely to be in scope of Norway PoHS. Some, but not all test equipment is listed as an EIP in China RoHS although the Chinese could broaden the scope.

Therefore, to demonstrate compliance, it could be useful to start collecting data on the six RoHS substances and possibly also the additional substances covered by the Norwegian legislation. Of the 18 PoHS substances, only lead, cadmium, possibly arsenic, DEHP, TBBPA and bisphenol A are likely to be present in electrical equipment. Some of the others (HBCD and chlorinated paraffin’s) are possible but unlikely.
