NWML - First Year of Enforcement

The National Weights and Measures Laboratory (NWML) has reported on its RoHS enforcement activities between January 2006 and September 2007.

They set out with a goal to deliver a supportive, modern body that helped industry to meet the objectives of the RoHS Directive.

Their aim was to assist business through education, promotion and direct engagement with the Producers of electrical and electronic equipment and other interested bodies.

Highlights of the reporting period include:
• An enquiry service that has logged over 4000 individual enquiries
• An informative web-site that received over 9 million hits in the first year
• Provided speakers for over 50 conferences raising awareness to around 7000 delegates
• Setting up and commissioning a screening test laboratory
• Direct investigation of individual companies resulting in the serving of up to 20 improvement plan notices, 3 EU notifications, 5 compliance notices, 1 warning letter and 1 case brought to justice.

NWML now looks to the future to build upon this success while industry faces the challenges of moving out of the transition stage of the RoHS Directive.
