There were some relevant outputs from a meeting held yesterday (13th November) on the status of the delayed China RoHS Directive.
There are some important updates: one is the working procedure known as the Rules for the Development Processes of the Prioritised Management Catalogue for the Control of Pollution Caused by Electronic Information Product. This was published in October, but was expected to be issued earlier this year. The document is required before further development on the so called "China RoHS Catalogue" and the delay means that the Catalogue is not now expected until well into next year. A spokesperson said that the selection of materials and products to be included in the initial Catalogue is still in the process of investigation and research, which should be the first phase set out in the working procedure mentioned above. While the Catalogue is further delayed some regulations will be published in the near future, including information around the Environmental Friendly Use Period (EFUP) and the criteria for certifying products
China RoHS will be upgraded to a higher level statute by State Council and the product scope may well be extended beyond that of simply Electronic Information Products (EIPs) as at present.
So, in summary, some progress but the initial, symbolic issue of the Catalogue has slipped from the end of 2007, to the end of 2008 and now well into 2009.
