EA announces 8 Battery Compliance Schemes

The Environment Agency in the UK has received eight applications from potential Battery Compliance Schemes (BCS).

All Producers who import one tonne or more of batteries into the UK must join a BCS (for portable batteries) who will take care of their Producer obligations.

The eight wishing to run a scheme face a one off application fee of £17,000 plus an annual subsistence charge of £118,000.

In addition, to reflect the costs of monitoring Producers in particular in dealing with data and compliance visits, schemes will be charged an additional £680 per member.

The Environment Agency will approve / reject applications by 30 September 2009.
