ECHA announces 7 most hazardous substances

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has recommended that seven REACH chemical substances of very high concern (SVHC) should not be used without specific authorisation.

Three of these substances are categorised as toxic to reproduction, one as carcinogenic and three fulfil the criteria for being persistent, bio-accumulative and toxic (PBT) or very persistent and very bio-accumulative (vPvB). They are all used in products where workers may be exposed.

The costly authorisation process seeks to ensure that any risks from these substances are properly controlled and that the substances are replaced going forward.

From the original list of 15 Candidate substances these seven were selected based on their hazardous properties, the volumes used and the likelihood of exposure to humans or the environment.

If added to the Authorisation List by the ECHA these substances can only be used for the specific purpose they are authorised for and downstream users can only obtain from the source that was granted the authorisation.
