8 new SVHCs - impact on EEE

On March 8 the ECHA published a consultation on 8 more Substances of Very High Concern.

Here, chemicals expert Dr. Paul Goodman of ERA Technology, trading as Cobham Technical Services takes a look at the possible impact on EEE.

"No surprises here, as all were in the list of intentions

on the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) website.

I expect that all of the chromates will be proposed for

approval which will cause big problems for the chromate

passivation and hard chrome plating industries.

Trichloroethylene will probably also require authorisation

with the result that where safer alternatives exist, its

use will no longer be permitted after the sunset date

as approval is likely to be refused. The boron compounds

are less certain. They are widely used and generally not

thought to be a big risk. It is possible that ECHA will not

propose these although we cannot be certain.
