Quad-core-tastic

When it comes to processor news, it's all gone quad-core...

AMD has finally released its long-awaited native quad-core "Barcelona" (check out the news article) with the 2.0 GHz, 55- and 75-watt, Quad-Core AMD Opteron server chips.

Intel made the most of its chance to overshadow the launch with a quad-core announceent of its own - Intel updates Xeon quad-cores. These "Tigerton"-based chips were the first multi-processors (MP) based on its now standard Core micro-architecture. Some people overlooked the fact that Intel had previously released quad-core Xeons - back in 2006 - but these "Clovertown"-based chips involved a 'dual die' architecture, where two separate dual-cores were packaged together.

Talking of microprocessors, we have updated the Trends & Technologies section with a new topic - x86 microprocessors. Check it out!
