Steve Jobs dials up 3G iPhone

Apple iPhone range.jpgThe much-vaunted touchscreen technology of the Apple iPhone is now joined by 3G comms, for 8GB and 16GB models.

GPS functionality has also been added, to support map-based and movement tracking apps. Geo-locational info can be triangulated using Wi-Fi and mobile transmitters.

Additionally, there is integration with Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, for the Blackberry-style delivery of 'push email', calendar synching, and access to corporate resources (with Cisco IPSec VPN and wireless network services with WPA2 Enterprise and 802.1X authentication).

Notwithstanding the new features, the price of the smartphone has been more than halved, from $599 to $199. A clear attempt top boost sales,.

UK pricing has not been officially announced, but according to this report, O2 has confirmed that the 8GB version of the iPhone 3G will cost £99 on a £30 or £35 monthly tariff, and be free for those on higher tariffs. Reportedly, the phone will also be available on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Talk time on the 3G iPHone is reportedly seven hours, with 300 hours of standby time.

Black cases are available for both storage capacities, and a white version is available for the 16GB model.

A 22-country-wide launch date of 11 July will see the new iPhone arrive in the UK.

You can see CEO Steve Jobs unveiling the new iPhone 3G in his WDC keynote in San Francisco.
