LED Luminaries light up the blog

led luminaries small.JPGDon't forget about the new LED technology blog launched on the site this week - LED Luminaries.

Read the posts and take part in the debate - we have over 25 comments on the blog already! That's excellent.

The three latest posts, for example are:

Who turned on the lights?
Recently refurbished National Express trains have been fitted with reading lamps "upfront", and each one has a switch - but they are never used.

Air Semiconductor goes blogging, On Air

lingerie gps-thumb-129x150.jpgI'm delighted to say we have a top UK startup stepping up to the blogging mark for us.

Stephen Graham, co-founder of the 2008 Elektra Start-up of the Year, Air Semiconductor, has agreed to take over duties for our Technology Startup blog.

As well as blogging about general startup issues, Stephen will also be looking at issues surrounding Air Semiconductor's particular area of electronics speciality - GPS. Two interesting topics for the price of one and he is already shaping up as a natural blogger.

Already he is doing a great job. Check out these posts, covering an epiphany by the Eiffel Tower, GPS enabled lingerie, and Ten Reasons to work for a Technology Startup:

* Starting-Up #1: Epiphany

* GPS Applications #1: GPS enabled lingerie

Google Latitude searches for results

The most basic search question of all: "Where are you?"...

I was writing about GPS developments yesterday, and today an interesting press release from Google arrives in my inbox. Announcing Google Latitude, it promises a solution to friends questioning you 'Where are you?'
"It is an opt-in feature in Google Maps for mobile that allows you to share your location with your friends and family. While it won't pinpoint your exact location, it gives you a good idea of where your friends are at a given time," says the release.

An Engineer in Wonderland - Cornflour heaven

An Engineer in Wonderland has a new home. You can find this particular entry here. If you wish to leave a comment, please do that on the new blog.

Cornflour 2.jpgAlong with a visitor last night came her son.

And along with the son came a jar of gunk which reminded me of the cornflour and water mix I played with years ago.

And what pleasure, it was cornflour and water.

For the uninitiated, this stuff behaves in a very odd way and will keep kids and the odd engineer entertained for hours.

When poured and stirred slowly, it is a liquid.

When thumped, it momentarily becomes a solid.

If you hit is hard enough, it will actually shatter before turning back into drops of liquid.

An Engineer in Wonderland - LEDs and lenses - a reality check

An Engineer in Wonderland has a new home. You can find this particular entry here. If you wish to leave a comment, please do that on the new blog.

Electronics Weekly sometimes requests device samples.

It is not that the team doesn't believe the specifications we are sent every day, it is just that it can be tricky to put 77dBA or 33 lm into perspective.

18feb09Cree3shrunk.JPGThe latest items to arrive in the post are a Cree MC-E power LED development board and some matching Eva collimators from Finnish lens maker Ledil.

The specifications are on the respective web sites, but what are the devices actually like?

Optimising standard-def video & The direction of light

panasonic HD ready TV.jpegCheck out two new in-depth articles recently made available on the site. They cover Optimising standard-definition video on high-definition displays and an in-depth consideration of the direction of light.

Optimising standard-definition video on high-definition displays
The availability of large-screen HD LCD TVs and plasma displays is driving the popularity of digital-TV broadcasts and HD-signal interfaces.
However, the ability to support legacy sources with the highest quality remains an essential requirement. The 3-D-comb video decoder is a critical processing block that can heavily influence overall system performance.

temp.jpgThree nights in a freezing shed, and finally an LED light sits on the front of a bike at Alice Towers. Following the over-heating disaster, I chickened out of soldering the re-made parts of the Mk V together and this time glued them with Arctic Alumina Adhesive.

Holiday bound

holiday beach image.jpgIt's just a quick post to say I'm off on a fortnight's hols...(I know, Christmas was only two months ago, but a family wedding calls...)

Just to emphasise that there'll be plenty of activity going on around the rest of the site from the Electronics Weekly team, so don't give ElectronicsWeekly.com a holiday, but this old web editor will be resting his well-deserved bones.

In particular, keep a close eye on all our blogs:

25feb09NextremeShrunk.jpgTo be fair, I cannot say I know as much about photons as an earth worm because I have no idea how much worms know about quantum physics.

So instead I will say I know almost nothing about photons*.

This has not stopped me being puzzled by this article

An Engineer in Wonderland - Led headlights - de-dazzling the beam

An Engineer in Wonderland has a new home. You can find this particular entry here. If you wish to leave a comment, please do that on the new blog.

IQfly.JPGInspired by comments made on one of the Electronics Weekly blogs, I thought I would have a go at estimating which led-collimators combination would not dazzle on-comers if used in a vehicle headlight.

A dazzle-free beam must be possible, because the IQ Fly pictured here can do it.

Now, I have to admit that I am winging the calculations here - so any corrections or refutations to the following are welcome.
