Axiom supports Engineering Education Scheme Wales

We are happy to report on a company doing its bit to encourage school kids to consider engineering as a career.

Sixth form pupils from a Gwent comprehensive school have been set an engineering challenge by a local manufacturing firm, Axiom Manufacturing Services, as part of a national scheme to promote careers in engineering.

Bassaleg Comprehensive School is taking part in the Engineering Education Scheme Wales, a principality-wide project run in conjunction with the Royal Academy of Engineering.

This sees groups of sixth-form students with an interest in engineering paired with a manufacturer who will set them a problem-solving project based around the principles of engineering.

"It is central to this scheme that local manufacturers support the students in their areas, and we are really pleased that Axiom is pairing with Bassaleg comprehensive and set them this project," said Austin Matthews, director of Engineering Education Scheme Wales.

"There are over 70 projects with industrial partners across Wales this year in our quest to give students real experience of the life of a professional engineer prior to making an informed choice of course at university. We are very grateful to the engineers who are helping to oversee the work and the contact teachers who have given up their own time to assist with the scheme."

The pupils, in this case, were set the task of designing a database to log IT issues and help improve the efficiency of Axiom's IT department. They will have until March to complete the project, with some assistance from a workshop at Cardiff University in December.

Participating schools will present their entries at a presentation held at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport on March 22nd where the award winners will be announced.
