Comment of the year - "sesquipedalian grandiloquence"

David Manners 011 small 80 x 74.JPGIt's only the start of 2010, but I strongly suspect we might already have seen the best comment of the year, on the Mannerism blog.

In the post Am I thick?, which is about a newly published report on "new technologies of awareness", David Manners (pictured left) wonders why he struggles with the terms used.

'The Baron' replies:
It's maybe not completely meaningless, but I think he's trying to make it sound much more cryptic via sesquipedalian grandiloquence. The music hall presenters of yore would be proud.
"Sesquipedalian grandiloquence" - I love it. That sets the mark, I reckon.

Unless, of course, you can do better... as Esther used to say.

Ash:

Unfortunately it was actually a comment fist publicly announced last year, in mid 2009. It was uttered by David Mitchell on the radio pannel show 'The Unbelievable Truth', speaking in referance to the author and journalist Will Self.

Although it is of course highly possible that 'The Baron' could have come up with it himself, it seems well timed to have been taken from the aforementioned pannel show.

Thanks Ash. I am sure your attribution is correct - good on Mr Mitchell for what is stil an excellent quote.

(I wonder if one day he will get into the OED for it - one boss I worked for claimed to have been the first person to use the term "Bunny Boiler" in print, which apparently was cited by the OED. Although I never I checked!)
