IP industry norms, and the power of information

iphone steel band 2.jpgDon't miss the latest opinion piece from Warren Savage, on the semiconductor industry in general, and EDA and IP in particular - Warren Savage On: The Power of Information

He considers the role of the Global Semiconductor Alliance's IP Working Group. This has recently announced to the GSA membership a quarterly survey that allows buyers and sellers to disclose in summary and anonymously the key terms that they have accepted in license agreements for the past quarter. The results of the survey will be made available to participants of the survey to enable them to compare themselves to the industry at large.

An Engineer in Wonderland - Energy harvesting and supercapacitors

An Engineer in Wonderland has a new home. You can find this particular entry here. If you wish to leave a comment, please do that on the new blog.

I came across a rather good article on using supercapacitors to buffer energy harvesters.

It was written by Pierre Mars of supercap maker CAP-XX, and published in the Journal of Energy Harvesting.

There is plenty about leakage, and even the problems of charging from 0V  when the chemistry needs a little kick start, it appears.

It ends with an application circuit including a vibration harvester from Perpetuum.

 - Although there is a potential flaw in the circuit, I don't think a MAX9107 could be used for the two comparators as the chip has a common power pin and the circuit requires them to be fed from two different rails.

A most interesting article.

An Engineer in Wonderland - I don't like tatoos, but.....

Apart from the first one which is a bit pretentions, I was at least entertained by this lot of techno body art.

SuperCap circuit thumb.jpgFrom Pierre Mars of CAP-XX

Just responding to your comment in the blog An Engineer in Wonderland - Energy harvesting and supercapacitors.

You are quite right, the final circuit would need 2 x MAX9015, you can't use both op amps in the dual version MAX9107.

Since then I have done some more work...

Only Connect: Easy ways to go green

pace diamond tips.jpgWelcome to the first post in a new series by Nick Locke, of  Nicab Ltd, who has over 15 years experience in the electronics manufacturing industry specialising in interconnection cable assembly.

We live in a world of diminishing natural resources and environmental damage. New regulations such as RoHS, WEEE & Reach have come into force but what can we do to make a real difference right now?

To explore this further here are some ideas that really can make a difference and, what's more, are easy to implement.

The fist step is to be totally committed to making a difference as to make these changes necessary will require some effort but as with all things that require some work the rewards are massive!

'Reliability is electronics trend at (1960) Farnborough'

acal_logo.pngA blast from the past - check out an article just uploaded on the site, that concerns Farnborough. Not the 2010 event but the 1960 event.

In the midst of preparing an online version of Electronics Weekly's very first issue fifty years ago, in September, we spotted a half-page feature on the 1960 Hampshire show...

View Electronics Weekly's 1960 Farnborough Show coverage

The main section headline is 'Reliability is electronics trend at Farnborough show'. The first story is about Marconi navigation equipment, and the second about bombs and missiles.

Only Connect: Better promoting the value of UK manufacturing

organic farming logo.jpgWelcome to the second post in a new series by Nick Locke, of  Nicab Ltd, who has over 15 years experience in the electronics manufacturing industry specialising in interconnection cable assembly.

We all know that we can't compete with Asia right? No, in fact there is a secret method for beating the perception that we have not choice other than to use the Far-East because of price. Well, here is an idea that might just work!

How about using the same model used in food marketing such as Organic and Free Range?

How does this work? Most people associate the Far-East with low wages and poor working conditions. We then remind our customers of the excellent conditions of our workshops and factories and recognise that most people working in electronics assembly earn well above the minimum wage.

Electroon #1 - "The power output's well up to standard"

Electroon #1Welcome to a new series - a look at the Electroon series of cartoons that graced Electronics Weekly for many years, starting with its very first issue back in September 1960.

It will be fun to run them week by week, as a look back into the past. No promises on the level of humour, though. These things don't always survive very well... (Sources also tell me that it is not the most politically correct cartoon, in the manner of saucey seaside postcards... On electronics? This I have to see...)

Take this one, for example. What is it about? leave your thoughts in the Comment box below. I'm afraid the cold war reference goes above my pretty, young head.

Photos: Intel silicon photonics for 50Gbit/s links

intel2 100.jpg
Don't miss the new picture gallery, just uploaded onto the site - Photos: Intel silicon photonics

Intel has stepped up its interest in using optical fibres for high speed interconnects in processor-based systems, reports Richard Wilson, and the visuals of the new photo gallery complement the text of the story.

The 50Gbit/s link in question is described as a "concept vehicle" that would allow Intel to test new ideas and continue its quest to develop technologies that transmit data using over optical fibres.
