What an amazing advert for the security of Blackberry phone-plus-personal-organisers.
The governments of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are so nervous about not being able to read messages between the handhelds, that they are effectively going to ban Blackberrys.
So, well done Research in Motion, for showing that wireless does not mean insecure.
I suppose there is an outside chance of a bluff? That the two gulf states can read the messages, and are trying to trick people into using them?

Actually, the threat may be a bluff to try to force RIM to provide a backdoor into the encryption scheme. It is believed that this is the way in which the U.S. and Canadian governments monitor Blackberry traffic. I haven't heard any rumors about how the British government is doing it but my guess would be that they, too, are using an access point provided by RIM.

I hadn't thought of that.
I was assuming the bigger governments broke into messages by cunning investigation and brute force computing.
But maybe they are just handed the keys.
