Only Connect: Product packaging (Going Green II)

ungreen packaging.jpgWelcome to the fourth post in a new series by Nick Locke, of  Nicab Ltd, who has over 15 years experience in the electronics manufacturing industry specialising in interconnection cable assembly.

Now that you have worked hard sourcing green components, such as the Alpha EcoWire we discussed in the last Going Green blog post, what else can we do?

Well, if we are going to be truly green we can't just stick a paragraph on our website about being totally committed to being green then send your customers products wrapped in a load of plastic!

Time to think beyond your products:
Many people are cynical about the whole green issue and you can't blame them. With so many claims of being green out there it is often the fine details that many companies slip up on.

Remember your customers are quite intelligent and don't like it when you say your green then don't live up to the expectations. So think about the full business cycle and let's focus on product packaging.

The choice is out there. You can replace all of your packaging today with environmentally friendly products. For example FP International a leading manufacturer of a wide range of biodegradable and recyclable packaging materials. Costs may be more, but the value of living up to your promises of green are priceless.

wrap logo.jpgIt is really easy to implement the changes to become greener and guess what, there is help out there from government organisations like Wrap whose only purpose is help businesses and individuals reap the benefits of reducing waste, develop sustainable products and use resources in an efficient way. Best of all their advice is FREE!

If you're not fussed or think this issue is only for tree huggers, think again. There is a new generation of customers that have gone all the way through school, college and university being taught, correctly, that the world has limited resources. They will be making buying decisions based on the complete value of the offer, which will include your respect for the environment.

"In a poll of 14,500 people in 15 countries, more than half said they were active ethical consumers". BBC (survey)

Moreover it's what your competitors are doing, and in this new economy can you afford not to keep up with the competition?
