An Engineer in Wonderland - ridiculous switching frequencies

An Engineer in Wonderland has a new home. You can find this particular entry here. If you wish to leave a comment, please do that on the new blog.

I can remember talking to a TDK ferrite guy in Japan once and seeing a look of how-are-we-going-to-make-that-inductor shock on his face when I said there was a dc-dc chip available that operated at 2MHz.

I was reminded of this when I read that Semtech has just announced something called the SC202, a 3.5MHz switching regulator whose efficiency peaks at 94%.

Clearly someone has got to grips with ferrites for these high frequencies.

More impressive is that the that whole thing, including inductor, is only 2.5x3x1mm - with a circuit footprint of 14mm2.

Just for completeness: input voltage is 2.9 to 5.5V and it has 15 pin-programmable output voltages between 0.8V and 3.3V.
