An Engineer in Wonderland - Thinner than a human hair

An Engineer in Wonderland has a new home. You can find this particular entry here. If you wish to leave a comment, please do that on the new blog.

Blah blah blah is 1,000 times thinner than a human hair.

What?

My human hair visualisation is already wobbling at half as thick as a human hair.
And why emphasise human?

And what colour human hair? - as fine blond human hair is about one tenth the thickness of course black human hair.

So, after a bit of thinking, I propose a new metric:

How many of [interesting things] would fit on the edge a razor blade.

Roughly, a human hair is 100µm in diameter, and a nice new razor blade edge is 0.4µm across, which I am approximating to 0.5µm when it has been used a bit.

Although you cannot visualise the edge of a razor (well, a few experts can) we all know that it is pretty thin.

So, a razor blade edge is 200 times thinner than a human hair - gaining two orders of magnitude.

Five state-of-the-art transistor gates would fit on the edge of a razor blade - which is amazing in itself - and easier to think of than 1,000 times thinner than a human hair.

I rest my case
