TSV on chip interconnection promising for 3D chip design

Just a quick post to flag an interesting article on the site that has proved very popular over the last few days.

android data usage 100.jpgThrough-silicon via (TSV) on chip interconnection of memory, processor and sensor elements looks the most likely route for 3D chip design, writes Richard Wilson.

He begins:
As the complexity of system-on-chip semiconductor devices grows designers are exploring the practicality of so-called 3D chips.

3D chips can take many forms but the most practical would seem to be through-silicon via (TSV) technology which allows die to be stacked on top of one another.

A common element of all processor-based systems is memory and Samsung Electronics and Micron Technology are proposing an open interface specification for TSV-based memory technology called the Hybrid Memory Cube (HMC).

Photos: SmartBird Electronics

4 SmartBird - Analysis 100.jpgI'm pleased to say there is a new Photo Gallery loaded onto the site - check out Electronics Weekly Picture Gallery - SmartBird Electronics
'SmartBird is an ultralight but powerful flight model with excellent aerodynamic qualities and extreme agility,' says Festo. 'This bionic technology-bearer, which is inspired by the herring gull, can start, fly and land autonomously - with no additional drive mechanism. Its wings not only beat up and down, but also twist at specific angles. This is made possible by an active articulated torsional drive unit, which in combination with a complex control system attains an unprecedented level of efficiency in flight operation. Festo has thus succeeded for the first time in creating an energy-efficient technical adaptation of this model from nature.'
Not impressed by the concept? Check out this video from the recent Ted Talks where the SmartBird featured as as the 'first ultralight artificial bird capable of flying like a real bird'.

Poll: Google's acquisition of Motorola Mobility good for Android?

Have your say in the poll running on our Android blog - Eyes on Android. The recent acquisition of Motorola Mobility by Google throws up a lot of questions, but what is your initial reaction?

Points in favour of the deal include side-stepping any possible patent disputes with Motorola.

Points against the deal include the possible negative impact on other handset makers, such as Samsung and HTC who now find Motorola a privileged competitor.

Could Apple be the ultimate beneficiary of this deal?

Making sense of MIMO antenna techniques

Don't miss an interesting article on the techniques necessary to support next-gen wireless technologies, such as LTE. Written by Nigel Wright and Mike McKernan of Spirent Communications, it is called Meeting the challenge of over-the-air MIMO testing

They begin:
Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) antenna techniques are a key factor in achieving the high data rates promised by next-generation wireless technologies such as LTE and LTE-Advanced. These new techniques impose significant challenges on the design and development of wireless devices, greatly complicating the associated RF testing.

Britain's FIRST Electronics Newspaper - We are 50!

Under the headline: 'Britain's FIRST Electronics Newspaper', Electronics Weekly announced its arrival to the world 50 years ago.

"This newspaper makes journalistic history," starts the announcement on the front page of the first edition of Electronics Weekly , published on 7 September 1960.

It was the first newspaper in the UK to be devoted specifically to electronics, which was described as "Britain's fastest growing industry".

Looking back over the past 50 years will convince you of one thing; the UK has an electronics and microelectronics heritage that it can be proud of.

Audi A8 drives Wi-Fi hotspot with Marvell chip

Audi A8 cars come with an LED headlight option.jpg
This news story caught my eye - cars could soon become Wi-Fi hotspots if a tie-up between a wireless chip maker and an in-car systems firm bears fruit, writes Richard Wilson.

Marvell has teamed with Harman Automotive to build a wireless hotspot into the 2010 Audi A8.

Called MMH, the Wi-Fi access point will apparently support up to eight devices. It uses standard 802.11 WPA2 authentication and data encryption mechanisms to provide security.

There's a new poll on the site - see the homepage - that asks What does twitter mean to you? (This was provoked by Richard Wilson's article Why do engineers have a downer on twitter?)

We are taking your temperature of affection for twitter, the micro-blogging system. It may be good for Stephen Fry but can it serve a serious business purpose for electronics professionals?

Private Equity takes a turn as Shiva the Destroyer

warren_floating228.jpg Don't miss Warren Savage's retrospective on the 'Noughties'. From the dot-com crash that heralded the decade, up to the current nascent recovery, he considers the challenges facing the electronics industry.

In Part 1 of the mini series, he commented on how the last decade marked a transitional period between the 20th and 21st century tech eras.
As described in Part 1, the decade saw the disaggregation of the semiconductor supply chain which started in the 1980's come to a fully complete state and the EDA industry begin to feel the after-effects of this disaggregation which (ironically) fuelled their growth for the last 20 years.

In-depth - Electronics and energy-efficient computing

energy efficient computing.jpgCheck out a new In-Depth article added to the site, written by Lee Harrison of Peritus Power - Standards lead push toward energy-efficient computing

Points covered include:

    * The ac/dc power-conversion step in the overall power chain for server farms can yield some of the most significant gains in power efficiency.
    * To meet industry standards, manufacturers have taken different approaches, including using interleaved PFC (power-factor control), bridgeless PFC, and resonant topologies.
    * Thanks to its 0V switching losses, higher switching frequencies, and smaller footprints, resonant-converter topology may be able to achieve Energy Star Platinum standards.
    * For the near future, silicon will remain the dominant switchingsemiconductor material, and gallium nitride will start to make inroads over the next year.

Debugging FPGA designs

Check out an interesting feature article we have just uploaded, regarding FPGA designs - Debugging FPGA designs harder than you think

The main points to note are:

  • Issues that arise during FPGA debugging include the quality of RTL (register-transfer-level) code, the quality of the IP (intellectual property), the quality of results from the synthesis engine, and the quality of results from the place-and-route engines.
  • It's common in FPGA IP to use two representations - one for high-level simulation and the other for the actual implementation.
  • IP models you use for simulation may differ in significant ways from the corresponding models the place-and-route software uses.

ewaste in Ghana
Just to flag another site-update - a new Photo Story has been added to our index. The latest addition, courtesy of Greenpeace, is a pictorial look at the impact of dumped electronic waste in the Third World (Ghana, in this case).

The first slide reads: "Do you know what happens to your old telly once it conks out and you chuck it away? Well, it can get dumped onto developing countries in Asia and Africa as 'second hand goods' where unprotected workers (often kids) dismantle computers and TVs in search of metals that can be sold."
