And you thought you were having a bad day?
Fox News reports that an angry employee (no kidding), wreaked havoc at an architectural firm when she deleted 7 years of drawings and blueprints valued at $2.5 million.
"She decided to mess up everything for everybody," Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokesman Ken Jefferson told reporters. "She just sabotaged the entire business."
Though the company was able to retrieve the data, it cost them a bundle. And it certainly does make you think twice about data security, or the lack thereof.

This architectural firm is living on borrowed time if they do not have a decent backup strategy in place. It was a disgruntled employee this time, but next time it will be a lightning strike or a flood, and then there is nothing to recover unless there are backups, preferably kept off-site.
There are automated backup tools out there which do not cost the world. Personally I track design documents etc. in a 'revision control system' which is designed for program source code, but works for other types of files as well. The advantages: you can retrieve your old versions as well as the latest ones, and the system I use makes creating off-site backups easy, so I have a remote computer make automatic backups every couple of hours.
Downside: if you get sued all the old files are available for discovery.

Ordinarily this story would be funny, but for two points:
a) it was posted here, the most unfunny of sites, and
b) Ge Weijers nerd-tastic comments.
