Cheers Miles. I've heard a few names for a 2CV but not that one. Looking on Wikipedia (it's becoming a reflex), 2CV apparently stood for ""two steam horses" as a literal translation of deux chevaux vapeur.

Talking of nicknames, the entry has a whole section devoted to international nicknames:

In Norway the name was "Jernseng", meaning "iron bed". In Iran it is known as "Jian / Zhian ژیان", which means "Fierce". In the United States it was known as the "flying rag top". American cartoonist Gilbert Shelton referred to it as the "duh-shuh-vuh", referring to the French pronunciation of "2CV".
