Made By Masters #6 - Bob Pease Analogue IC Design

WOM image.jpgElectronics Weekly technology editor Steve Bush writes a tribute to Bob Pease, master of analogue integrated circuit design.

Former National Semiconductor analogue guru Bob Pease died the other day, tragically in a car crash driving away from a memorial for Linear Tech's quiet king of application notes Jim Williams.

The many publications of both men are tributes to their knowledge, thoroughness, and creativity.

With Pease, there is so much that it is hard to choose best examples.

Try What's All This Wattmeter Stuff, Anyhow? for a lesson on fine-tuning a design.

Made By Masters #5 - Les Paul electric guitars

Gibson Les Paul Goldtop.jpg
A reader of this blog, Russell Dawson, once more bravely steps forward to present a nomination for the Made By Masters category... Gibson Les Paul guitars (the master himself, of course, quite recently pased away - see this tribute from the BBC website). Russell writes:

"Credited with many innovations, including overdubbing, delay and phasing effects, the late Les Paul's greatest invention was the world's best selling guitar - the Gibson Les Paul. His first prototype called "The Log" built in 1939 was one of the first ever solid-body electric guitars.

Since the 30's, Gibson Les Paul's provided a curvy body shape and a glued fixed neck compared to Fender's bolt on neck design, with the first mainstream Les Paul guitar 1952 edition featuring a one-piece, 'trapeze'-style bridge and tailpiece with two P-90 single coil pickups.

A literary staircase

down stairs 1.jpgA contender for our Made By Masters series?

We've written before about Stairways to Heaven and steps that don't go anywhere. Well, here's a positive example: the space consists of nothing but steps (but useful steps giving access to lots of books). The perfect library in the attic...

Credited to the company Levitate, apartmenttherapy.com writes:
London-based Levitate Architects came up with this ingenious solution to a book storage problem and created a loft-like bedroom nestled under the roof of the top-floor apartment.

Made By Masters #4 - The SEGA Megadrive

Sega megadrive.jpgA reader, Russell Dawson, has bravely stepped forward to present a nomination for the Made By Masters category.... The SEGA Megadrive, a game-changing device that redefined electronics games consoles:

Launched in Europe at the latter end of 1990 and famed for its slogan "To be this good takes AGES, to be this good takes SEGA!", the Megadrive (or Genesis for our US friends) was part of the 4th generation consoles using 16 bit architecture.

Initially sold two years previously in the US and with a host of games to back the UK launch, it went on to sell over 29 million units worldwide.

Made By Masters #3 - The LM10

lm10 cirucit diagram.jpg
Our new Made By Masters series looks at electronics classics in the making, and our thanks go to 'Alice' of the Engineer in Wonderland posts for the latest in the series. Following the Apple iPod and the Motorola RAZR is the LM10.

The extraordinarily cunning and versatile op amp and reference chip is a "symphony with all the components playing in perfect harmony" in the words of Hans Camenzind. See the full application note.

The designers' designer, writes Alice, was Bob Widlar.

Made By Masters #1 - The iPod

iPod original.jpgBy way of contrast, our new Made By Masters series celebrates the best in electronics design. For the first contender it would almost be perverse to ignore the mighty iPod. Since its release in October 2001, it's shaped a whole market, whether in Classic, Shuffle, Nano or now Touch variations.

The challenging question becomes: If you could place just one iPod in a historic pantheon, which one would it be? It isn't just a question of appearance, but the form factor in terms of the functionality packed into that design, and also the price, too (we are talking about a consumer item).

This sounds a bit like a topic for dinner party conversation, once property prices have been exhausted (not that I go to any dinner parties, but I read about them in The Guardian)...

Made By Masters #2 - The Motorola RAZR

Moto RAZR 2 jpg.jpg
Our new Made By Masters series looks at modern design classics in the making. The first was the iPod, and the second features a mobile phone... <cue drum roll> ...the Motorola RAZR.

Its astonishing sales, distinctive looks and small size, combined with reasonable(ish) functionality, earn it a place in our newly constructed and rather makeshift Pantheon. A controversial choice, maybe.

These days, it's easy to forget the impact this slimline clamshell made back in 2004. And it's also hard to figure out how things have since gone so wrong for Motorola in the mobile space, from the position of market leader. Any thoughts on that one?

Anyhoo, back to the glory days... The Star Trek factor undoubtedly played a role - set "Phasers to stun", anyone? - but that alone can't explain its massive sales and undeniable cool. Motorola shipped more than 50 million RAZRs by 2006, and more than 75 million by 2007. That's a lot of people saying "Hello Moto".

And this despite the fact that the Razor was never supposed to be anything more than a "halo product", serving to reflect some glory on Motorola rather than shift product units by the boat load.
