Android aids Java programming popularity

tiobe-chart.jpgI’m old enough to remember Java as the brand new kid on the block, but that is a while ago and its fortunes have rather waxed and waned a long time since… However, it seems, its links to Android are (re)boosting its popularity…

Computer World UK reports that the “write-once-run-everywhere” language has returned to the top spot in a monthly sampling of the popularity of programming languages, which is carried out by the code analysis company Tiobe Software.

Paul Krill writes:

The Tiobe Programming Community Index again has Java as the most popular language. The company says Java’s ties to Android mobile development are the reason for its recent good fortune. “Boosted by the success of Android phones, Java has gained most market share of all languages last half a year,” Tiobe said.

Java has displaced C at the top, after a 10 month run, followed by Objective-C (used for iOS development) and C++…(MATLAB is a climber at #18, by the way!)

Tiobe itself writes:

The TIOBE Programming Community index is an indicator of the popularity of programming languages. The index is updated once a month. The ratings are based on the number of skilled engineers world-wide, courses and third party vendors. The popular search engines Google, Bing, Yahoo!, Wikipedia, Amazon, YouTube and Baidu are used to calculate the ratings. Observe that the TIOBE index is not about the best programming language or the language in which most lines of code have been written.
