When high fashion meets electronics engineering

Picture it: Paris, October 2006 (so light years ago in fashion-speak). The crème de la crème of the world’s fashion set wait for the British fashion designer Hussein Chalayan’s collection to hit the catwalk. What they don’t know is that they are about to witness a feat of electronics engineering in the most unlikely of places: Paris Fashion Week.

In what was called a blend of the ‘commercial and fantastical’, an evolution of fashion unfolded in front of the eyes of fashion’s elite in Chalayan’s Spring Summer 2007 Collection. He showcased a range of dresses that utilised microchip technology to completely transform themselves into an entirely different garment. Chalayan described his collection as ‘prototypes for ideas for the future’.

The Cyprus-born Brit is no stranger in straddling the sometimes massive gap between electronics and fashion in efforts that are regularly described as ‘mesmerising’ and ‘breathtaking’. For autumn/winter 2007, the pioneer in using microchip technology for haute couture laced his collection with LEDs which allowed graphics and films to be projected on to his creations.
