Browsing round YouTube for Solar Cell videos, came across this interesting one from DrSkippy's blog - "FlatTop" vs. "2-Cell". This is described, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, as "a display of raw solar drag racing power", but instructions on building these Solar-roller machines for yourself can be found on a Solarbotics website called Beam Online.
A schematic, parts list, and circuit notes can be found here, for the "1381 Solar Engine".
According to the site:
"BEAM robotics is the brain child of Mark W. Tilden who is currently working at "Los Alamos National Laboratory" in Los Alamos, New Mexico, US. BEAM robotics as described in the BEAM rule book: A description of what aspects a roving robot creature could contain."
Note BEAM is apparently a triple acronym which stands for:
Biology Electronics Aesthetics Mechanics
Building Evolution Anarchy Modularity
Biotechnology Ethnology Analogy Morphology
