Competition - Win an LED Jellyfish Mood Lamp

Jellyfish led.jpg
COMPETITION CLOSED (as of 29 August 2008)

Time to kick off August with another Gadget Freak competition. The prizes in the past have been a wind-up radio and an iPod shuffle. This time it's an LED Jellyfish Mood Lamp!

We wrote about these rather eye catching installations last month - obviously, it's just a bit of fun - and thought it would make a good prize.

The ambient lighting device is described as having a "whisper-quiet" operation and features an auto-off safety function that kicks in after four hours of use. You simply fill the moulded black tank with water, chuck in the jellyfish, fit the top and plug in. If you want single-colour jelly fish, rather than a changing sequence of colour, you flick a switch...

Correctly answer this question for a chance of winning:

solio classic.jpgUPDATED: competition now closed.

The prizes in the past have been a wind-up radio, an iPod shuffle, and an LED Jellyfish Mood Lamp.

For September, the prize to win is a solar-powered Solio Classic (black), described as a Hybrid device because it can take power from either the sun or the wall, storing the energy in its internal rechargeable battery.

It's 303 entries and still counting, for the Solio solar-powered device charger competition.

Thank you to all who have taken part, but keep the entries coming. The closing date for the compo is Friday 10 October.

It's a neat bit of kit. "Solio, the Universal 'Hybrid' Charger, is powerful enough to charge all of your handheld electronic products at home or on the move, anywhere under the sun," boasts the company.

It is described as a Hybrid device because it can take power from either the sun or the wall, storing the energy in its internal rechargeable battery. And we have one to give away.

Competition - Win Dorling Kindersley's 'Cool Stuff Exploded'

cool stuff exploded cover.jpgCOMPETION CLOSED - Congratulations to our winner from Worthing, West Sussex.

Time for a new Gadget Freak competition, and in the run up to Christmas this would make a great present for a young would-be engineer: Cool Stuff Exploded, Dorling Kindersley, previously featured on this blog.

Think of it as a younger-person's teardown analysis, definitely one for budding Gadget Freaks or people who like to delve inside devices.

Impressive it is, I must say, with very lavish illustrations. I like for example the Look Inside of a Freeplay radio, and solar cells, KEF Muon speakers, Breitling watches and cordless drills also get the DK treatment. Check out the Look Inside and Introduction sections.

The prize to be won this month is the Plug-In Power and Energy Monitor Meter.

Measuring voltage, amps, watts, volt-amps, frequency and power, this clever little unit lets you check just how much power your home appliances are using, or wasting. It is potentially a very good way to help keep electricity bills down.

The prize question

Let electronic music play on

laser harp.JPG
If music be the food of love, play on,
Give me excess of it; that surfeiting,
The appetite may sicken, and so die.
Ahead of October/November's imminent competition post, here is a roundup of some music related posts on Gadget Freak.

They range from weeping (Wacom) guitars, and laser harps, to Theremins and the sound of nostalgia. Take it away maestro!

GPS Backtracker competition

GPS Backtracker.jpgIt's time for the January/February Gadget Freak compo! It's now kindly sponsored by DigiKey.

This device caught my eye recently - very good for people who get lost at festivals or town centres or car parks (though maybe not multi-storey car parks!)...

So, the prize up for grabs this time is a GPS Backtracker, described as a personal location finder. In other words, store a location (or three) and wherever you may wonder you can then be safely guided back to your original position...
