Build your own electronic distance meter

From the Build Your Own Microcontroller Projects site - a very handy and comprehensive collection of electronic DIY projects - comes the electronic distance meter.

With summer upon us, many (begrudgingly) head to the gym, knowing that fewer layers of clothing mean you can't always get away with that second piece of cake. And now, thanks to the electronic distance meter, comes another reason to hate exercising.

Wichit Sirichote, who also owns and manages the Build Your Own Microcontroller site, created the device to measure the distance while on a bicycle. Sirichote works at the Department of Applied Physics in the Faculty of Science at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladrabang, in Bangkok, Thailand. The electronic distance meter is battery operated with Nitron 68HC908QY4 and 16-pin MCU.

Sirichote's eureka moment came when he accompanied his son riding his bike in a nearby park and then realised he could create an electronic distance meter attached to a bike's wheel that would measure exactly how far a rider had gone.
