From our sister publication Made by Monkeys, a tale of what happened when engineer Dave Johnson felt ripped-off by the purchase of a cheap LED night light. He reconfigured the circuit and turned it into a much more expensive one - but at least it works.
In a perfect world, an LED light should make it to its tenth birthday, unlike the 4W incandescent lamps used in nightlights that burn out after a few short months. But, as Dave Johnson discovered, the cheaply-made LED struggled to make to the three month finish line.

Sadly, this is my experience - the (presumeaby Chinese) manufacturers are so intent on keeping the cost down they don't seem to mind making completely and utterly false claims based on the lifetime of a LED under ideal conditions. You either seem to have the garden light manufacturers who completely underdrive the leds - giving pitiful performance in every garden LED light I've ever tried - or extremely short life in the case of plug-in-the-wall lamps and even "quality" products. Go into any store (UK: B&Q, MAPLINS) demonstrating high-intensity led products and there will always be a number of broken LEDS - this simply should NOT happen - but it does.

I've put a link to an article I've written about LED garden lights, this should ring true with others.
