Gadget of the Week: Bang & Olufsen BeoTime flute alarm clock

bang olufsen beotime.jpgTime for our semi-regular review of product releases, announcements and sheer rumours from the world of consumer electronics. What's happening out there?

Well, for those interested in e-books, rumours of the appearance of Amazon's Kindle in the UK this December will catch the eye. It's being tipped to gain 3G and Wi-Fi support, with likely candidates for the carrier apparently being T-Mobile and O2.

Starting at the "toy" end of the gadget spectrum, note the USB Star Trek Communicator, and the "London Calling" mobile phone shaped like the traditional red phone boxes... Then there is also talk, according to SlashGear, of Sony revealing "plans to add facial recognition capabilities to their PlayStation Eye webcam, potentially stealing part of Microsoft's Project Natal thunder".

Getting a bit more serious, there is what claims to be the "worlds smallest memory card reader", the device being almost no bigger than a Micro SD card itself (it actually supports Micro SD, T-Flash, and Micro SDHC formats).

Fujitsu's thin-client PC, the FUTRO S100, also caught my eye as it features a 500MHz VIA Eden ULV processor, which apparently enables the system to draw just 11 watts under full load.

There's also a rival to the Flip UltraHD easy pocket camcorder - the Samsung Electronics HMX-U10. It's spec includes a SDHC card recording medium, the H.264 video codec, a 2-inch LCD display and 1/2.3-inch CMOS lens.

Penultimately, for gamers who like their lap-tops to be high-end and red, there's Alienware M17x gaming laptop (pictured below), which now gets a "special edition" Nebula Red model (featuring a Core 2 Extreme Quad processor and dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M graphics, says Engadget).

But for me, the Gadget of the Week title goes to the Bang & Olufsen BeoTime flute alarm clock and remote.

Engadget writes:
Designed by Steffen Schmelling and inspired by Mozart's The Magic Flute, this elongated wireless alarm clock actually serves another purpose. Once it has awoken you from your slumber just in time to catch The Price Is Right in high-def, you can take it with you in order to control some of your other B&O components. The cubes you see are actually displays, and the built-in motion sensor enables display backlights to activate with a simple touch.
Reportedly they will be available in August priced around the $375 mark. I can't wait, to look at it through shop windows!
