Intel launches desktop modding challenge

One for the modding enthusiasts among you. Intel has launched the Core i7 Custom Challenge, with $10,000 in prizes up for grabs.
"This challenge rewards innovation and imagination, declares Intel. "We're challenging enthusiasts like you to create an incredible desktop that will envision the possibilities of tomorrow's technology - from awesome gaming PCs to outstanding platforms for home automation."
"This multi-country design challenge is open to anyone who wants to build a desktop that demonstrates a bold vision of a creative future. You can choose to either showcase your Mod Creativity, or you can show us how you can improve everyday life with a Lifestyle Innovation, or both."

Getting into the Web 2.0, this is not just a compo. There is also a Twitter account and a Facebook app.

Once people have submitted their modded desktops, from November 23 to December 7 all finalist entries will then be displayed on the on www.intelcorechallenge.com. These can then be voted on, with the public's favourite named the People's Choice winner. A panel of industry experts will determine which mods will win in each of the other five award categories. (see below)

What will be the criteria? Intel writes:
Submissions will be judged on five factors according to our panel of judges, comprised of sponsors, Intel employees, and industry experts. Contestants will be awarded up to ten points per factor, for a total of 50 points.
  1. Overall mod creativity.
  2. Mod paint job/creativity.
  3. Technical enhancements.
  4. Demonstration creativity.
  5. Futuristic vision.
The categories and prizes are as follows:

Best in Show "CPU Magazine Award"
  • a $1,500 US dollar gift card (or currency equivalent) cash
  • Atom-based netbook
Best for Mod Creativity
  • a 160GB Intel Solid State Drive
  • Flip* MinoHD Camcorder 120 Minutes + accessories
Best for Digital Lifestyle
  • a 160GB Intel Solid State Drive
  • a 32GB iPod touch
Best Video
  • a $250 USD gift card
Best in Country
  • USA: one latest Intel desktop board Extreme series, one Intel Core i7  Extreme Edition processor
  • Canada: one latest Intel desktop board Extreme series, one Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition processor
  • Each participating European country: a 160GB Intel Solid State Drive
  • Japan: a 160GB Intel Solid State Drive
People's Choice
  • an Intel Atom based netbook
  • a Flip* MinoHD Camcorder 120 Minutes + accessories
