Check out this example of Arduino powering a new style, social radio – a “Skube“. This is a music player that “allows you to discover and share music and facilitates the decision process of picking tracks when in a communal setting,” according to its creators (Andrew Nip, Ruben van der Vleuten, Malthe Borch, and Andrew Spitz).
It’s a prototype that combines an Arduino, Max/MSP and an XBee wireless networking, reports SoundPlusDesign, and was part of the Tangible User Interface module at the Copenhagen Institute of Interactive Design.
Apparently, it has two modes: Playlist and Discovery. The first simply plays the tracks on the device. The latter looks to match similar songs to the ones already on your device, to help discover new tracks that fit your bill….
How does it work?
We access the Last.fm API to populate the Skube with tracks and scrobble, and using their algorithms to find similar music when in Discover mode. Then using Applescript, we get Spotify to play the music. We use XBees for the wireless communication between the Skubes and to the computer using custom software that manages all this.
