RusskiOS

If you could switch to a PC OS which runs faster than Windows, performs all Windows applications programmes as if it were Windows, can be seamlessly installed without affecting already-installed programmes and costs nothing would you do it?

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev might be providing us all with this opportunity if he agrees to back ReactOS, a Russian OS which claims to do all of the above.

According to the BBC website, Russian schoolboy Marat Karatov, recently met Medvedev and asked him for €1 million to make the OS ready for distribution. Medvedev told Karatov he’d think about it.

ReactOS developer Aleksandr Rechitsky says “you can change the system but leave all the programmes intact.” He said ReactOS loads in ten seconds.

If  ReactOS  developers get their €1 million, it will take about a year to finalise its development, says Rechitsky.

  1. “it will take about a year to finalise its development”
I seem to recall hearing that expression from software developers before… many times.

  2. ReactOS has been around for a while, I think even back in the days of WABI and Sun. But it kept playing catch-up and delivered little so far. Bets would be better placed on Linux+Wine (see winehq.org). It may not be a Mouton 59, but good enough for me.

  4. I have to say that it does rather surprise me, in view of all the prosecutions brought using computer evidence, that anyone entrusts to their computer anything they want to keep secret, Robertl. What’s wrong with putting your secret stuff on good old pen and paper and tucking it under the mattress?

  5. It being a truly international and not a primarily Russian product does reduce the risk of gangsters being able to have a back door inserted down to an acceptably small probabilty.

  6. Peter Tattam (trumpet winsock fame) wrote Petros/ClassiOs some years ago as a rewrite when microsoft were forced to release the win32 API details. Unfortunately none of these projects seems to get enough traction to really succeed…

  7. Yes, very revealing, george, no mention of the South African connection – though there is an acknowledgment of Spanish participation – but it leaves the impression it’s a Russian initiative in inception and funding. Reminds you of the old crack ‘There’s no truth in Izvestia and no news in Pravda’.

I think that if you read about the presentation at the ReactOS web page here: http://www.reactos.org/en/news_page_67.html you will come away with a very different impression.

  9. Thanks Mark, I had no idea nor, it seems, did the BBC.

  10. A Russian OS!?
Whilst the current project coordinator, Aleksey Bragin, is Russian, the original project coordinator, Jason Filby, was a South African, and developers are spread across the world.

  11. Does anybody know what the Russian for ‘back door’ is?
