Wills Installs Leo Computer

Greater efficiency in their services to customers all over the country using a newly installed Leo computer was demonstrated by W D and H O Wills at Bristol, on Monday.

So, 50 years ago this year, starts a story in Electronics Weekly’s edition of September 28th 1960.

The story continues:

This is the company’s second Leo installation. With four years experience of preparing daily information on customer’s accounts in the South and West of England, the company is now ready to extend this activity to the rest of the country.

Up to now 2,000 to 3,000 orders have been processed each day – this represented some 40 per cent of the firm’s business.

Before the advent of the electronic computer, the sales accounting department needed a vast battery of mechanical accounting machines.

  1. I can’t remember the last time I saw “a vast battery of mechanical accounting machines.” It has been a while!
