Poor Old Nokia

Poor old Nokia. After being decimated by shocking leadership and sold off to the Yanks now comes the kicker – 25% of the Finnish workforce in the old handset business are to be sacked.

What is adding insult to injury is that the sackings are being executed by one of the perceived architects of Nokia's misfortunes - Stephen Elop.

And what is even worse is that Elop starts his memo to inform people of the sackings with the words "Hello There."

Elop seems determined to make himself the most loathed man in Finland. Even the Prime Minister commented adversely on the size of his $33 million pay-off.

For the Finns, the bright side is that Microsoft has set aside $1.6 billion for severance payments for a total of 18,000 employees which works out at $88,000 a head.

That amount of money going into the pockets of Finnish engineers should mean we're going to see some exceptional start-up activity in Finland.

  1. Unfortunately you probably can’t. Countless startups have tried to design around fundamental patents but few succeed, Modern patents are generally well drawn up to leave few holes, even if they overclaim sometimes.

  2. Crikey AlanM, is it that much? It would be fun if some of those sacked, but newly enriched, Nokia guys came up with an Android phone which knocked MS out of the mobile market. Particularly if they could design around MS’ IP.

  3. Hmm $1.6 billion, that just over half of MS annual revenue from IP licensing to Android.
    Better the devil you know…..

  4. Yes, DontAgree, it looks as if MS will be straightforward and transparent whereas Micron were tricksy and mean-spirited

  5. Yes Bitter, as an object lesson in how to destroy a great company Kallasvuo and Elop put up stellar performances. Elop must be the most loathed man in Finland.

  6. It might just be that Microsoft has learned from how Micron fared in Italy, which of course you had something to do with.

  7. I estimate that by 2018 the Finnish government will be entirely Microsoft-free as a consequence of MS gutting Nokia.

And those new and old companies hiring back-stabbed Nokia staff in the wake of these layoffs will suddenly be quite “reluctant” to purchase and run MS products.

Though, one must admire the strategic move of MS of rounding up all the Nokia FOSS/Android dissidents, make them produce a viable Android phone (Nokia X) and then fire ’em all. That mischievous prankster Elop. :-)
