The Bastards

Ed de Castro, the founding president of minicomputer pioneer Data General, liked aggressive ads.

But the best one ever produced never got published though a framed copy hung in de Castro’s office.

It ran: “They say IBM’s entry into minicomputers will legitimise the market.”

‘The bastards say, Welcome.”

    This reminds me of one of my favourite expressions: “Nil carborundum”, to which one may add “illegitimusi”. In this case exclamation marks are permitted.

    I’m pretty sure this is mentioned in Tracy Kidder’s “The soul of a new machine”.
    What a brilliant book – read it if you haven’t.
    Or, read it again if you read it when it first came out.
