First Intel, then ARM and now AMD all in Eclipse

AMD is the latest big name in the PC industry to jump into tthe open source software community. The processor company is to participate in the Eclipse Foundation.

Does this endotrsement make Eclipse the only show in town for embedded system designers looking to go open source?

Maybe. Remember, Intel, ARM and TI are already signed up Eclipse members.

Add AMD and you have some pretty hefty processor clout behind the royalty-free design environment which is looking to become the basis for a standard extensible development platform and application frameworks for x86 and multi-core processors.

Extensible means that developers can expand or add to the embedded software they acquire as long as they adhere to the plug-in rules of the Eclipse Foundation.

For more see the Eclipse Summit Europe 2007, taking place Oct. 9 – 11 in Ludwigsburg, Germany.
