There will be a shortage of DRAM sometime in the future.
Well, yes that is the nature of the semiconductor supply. Balancing supply and demand has always been a bit tricky.
A shortage of DRAM in a few months. Surely that must be a mistake. However, Taiwan's biggest DRAM firm Powerchip, which has its own problems, has suggested that there could be a DRAM shortage as soon as the third quarter of this year. I see.
I know DRAM production has been cut significantly in Taiwan and Korea over the last few months as demand and prices fell.
But surely in the current economic climate demand for memory chips won't pick up enough in the next few months to put supply under pressure.
According to Powerchip chairman Frank Huang, DRAM inventory could be significantly run down by June.
If he's right that could very well lead to shortages in Q3.
Suppliers are unable to ramp up new production quickly and probably they have no great motivation to do so.
A period of higher prices would benefit all DRAM suppliers which have been under the cosh of plunging prices for sometime.
