Will Julius Genachowski bring WiMax broadband to the US?

Who is Julius Genachowski? He's the man who could turn the US into the broadband leader.
He has been picked by President Obama to head-up the US comms regulator, the Federal Communications Commission.

And Julius Genachowski could just be the guy who saves the US from further broadband embarrassment.

To date the US has been embarrassingly slow in bringing universal broadband Internet services to its population. This guy could change that.

"We should have, I believe, a communications infrastructure that is world-leading," Genachowski told the US Congress this week.

And he's not talking about wires, this is wireless broadband and Obama has given him a war-chest of many billion dollars to invest in the wireless industry.

The question is will WiMax or LTE power the US wireless broadband backbone network?

Globally, the common belief is that LTE, which is effectively an enhancement of existing 3G technology, has the edge in convincing more operators.

But will this broadband drive in the US tip the balance back in favour of WiMax, which has been championed by a number of influential US companies including Intel, Cisco and Sprint?

They will be telling Julius Genachowski that WiMax is the best option for supplying wireless broadband over metropolitan areas.

But don't write-off the chances of LTE which is championed by AT&T and Verizon, and could be providing services within two years.

WiMAx will struggle to match that, but then again Julius Genachowski could yet change the end-game.
