Catalogue distribution is going online. But what portion of the leading catalogue firms' business is now carried out via the internet?

Globally, online sales as a percentage of total sales is as follows:

Digi-Key 67%
Mouser  60%
Farnell   55%
RS        50%

But the numbers are even bigger in specific markets. RS does 70% of its business on the web in Japan.

Then Digi-Key uses the internet for 98% of its sales in the UK.

Talk that the economic crisis of the last 12 months could take a generation to put right seems laughable when you look at the resilience of the semiconductor market.

What chance that this year's fall in sales will be largely wiped out by growth next year?

Every chance, if you consider the predictions being made about the automotive chip market. Which, let's remember, has been hit as hard as any market in 2008.

Nu Horizons Electronics has extended its franchise with Sharp Microelectronics beyond the US to include the UK and Nordic territories.

Inventory corrections seem to be over in the semiconductor supply chain.

With the inventory correction is behind the industry, now the talk is of sales growth and allocation.

Oh happy times.

Anglia's CEO Steve Rawlins does not believe in bloated linecards. This is a rule he has adhered to in putting together the distributor's semiconductor offerings.

RS Components has added LeCroy oscilloscopes and serial data test systems to its T&M offering.

Intel's Q3 results seem to have given the industry a confidence boost as the industry emerges from the downturn which started a year ago.

But are conditions in the chip market really improving or just not quite as bad as they were?

Paul Otellini, Intel president and CEO probably thinks the former is true when he talked of "this momentum in the current economic climate" when commenting after the chip maker's Q3 results.

ARM is working with the SOI Industry Consortium to run a silicon on insulator (SOI) design seminar.

The company recognises a need to help IC designers understand the significant differences between designing on SOI versus bulk silicon, to achieve power-saving and integration benefits.

Arrow is offering customers in the UK, Eire and the Nordic and Baltic countries the opportunity to use certain semiconductor development tools free-of-charge for 28 days.

Tech support is a combination of face-to-face and web tools writes Phil Gee is v-p sales Europe at Nu Horizons.

Premier Farnell has signed further power IC and LED driver lines with a global franchise agreement with Exar.

MSC-Gleichmann Electronics has created a new business group to address the market for embedded display systems.

As part of this activity the distributor is developing a number of reference designs and development boards.

Choosing an FPGA is about power and speed, says Acal Technology's managing director Steve Carr

"The key challenge for designers in new FPGA markets is to achieve the perfect balance of power consumption, speed and cost for each application," says Carr.

Designers must not only assess a range of competing technologies and manufacturers, they must also understand the emerging trends within the end-users' market.

"This is critical so that they can be certain that the functions and capabilities they are investing development dollars in today, will retain their competitive edge when the product reaches the market in six to nine months time," says Carr.
