Intel sees netbooks outselling iPhone and Wii

Intel points to netbook sales beating iPhone and Nintendo Wii sales in last 12 months as it launches a new Atom processor aimed at both netbooks and desktops.

A feature of the new  Atom processors is integrated graphics built directly into the CPU.
The Atom platform for netbooks consists of a new Intel Atom processor, the N450, and a new low-power Intel NM10 Express chipset.

There is also the Atom processor D410 or the dual core D510 for desktops, also paired with the NM10 Express chipset.

The processor is smaller than its predecessor due to the use of a  45nm high-k metal gate manufacturing process.

The chip firm introduced the first Atom processors for netbooks in June 2008, and Intel said it has shipped over 40 million Atom chips for netbooks.

"In the same timeframe, netbooks ramped faster and sold more units than Apple's iPhone or the Nintendo Wii," said Intel

"We think the growth will continue for devices like netbooks and entry-level PCs built around basic computing and Internet usage models," said Mooly Eden, general manager of Intel's PC Client goup.
