DRAM benefits from PC upturn, but will it last?

DRAM sales are set to go up and to the right in 2010, something they haven't done for three years, says marketwatcher iSuppli.

DRAM sales could jump by as much as 40.4% in value this year to hit $32bn, estimates iSuppli.

The pointers come from Q4 of 2009 when average selling prices (ASPs) climbed by 16% and bit shipments rose by 21%.

This was the best quarter for DRAM suppliers for quite some time.

The worry must be that in the DRAM business record quarters can be followed by a couple of weaker quarters as inventory levels adjust.

Analyst iSuppli thinks this will not happen in 2010 as DRAM suppliers have done a good job managing manufacturing capacity.

But the real unknown is whether demand for DRAM largely from the PC sector will be maintained.

Recent good news from the likes of HP seem to indicate that the enterprise PC market is holding up.

I guess it is not just the DRAM suppliers who will be hoping that remains the case.
