How to make sure products comply with Noise at Work regulations

How do I make sure my products work within the limits set by the Noise at Work regulations?

I blogged recently about the trend of companies that manufacture IT and communications equipment testing their equipment to the Noise at Work Directive sound level limits, and have been asked how is the testing actually performed?

This is a great question as the Directive applies to a real environment, with many different noise sources.

If you are an equipment manufacturer, it's clearly impossible to test in every possible office environment.

Fortunately there are test methodologies defined that let you simulate the environment in which the equipment will be used. The system can be set up in an anechoic chamber with a simulation of the background noise, and measurements taken using a standardised simulator representing the human head and torso.
