Electronics in explosive atmospheres - standards stop things going bang!

Many companies develop products that need to operate in explosive atmospheres - areas where flammable liquids, vapors, gases or combustible dusts are likely to occur in quantities sufficient to cause a fire or explosion.

Increased industrial automation means that more electronic products operate in such environments, therefore requiring certification to ensure that they will not cause an explosion during normal operation.

In the UK, equipment has traditionally been certified to the ATEX standard, but increasingly companies are choosing IECEx testing because it enables one laboratory to carry out core testing that will be accepted by the 31 countries which are members of the scheme. This not only makes design and development simpler, with engineers designing for just one standard, but also dramatically cuts the cost, time and paperwork involved in selling products internationally.

In addition to helping secure international acceptance for a product, a well-planned approach to testing and the right test house means that you can complete IECEx testing alongside CE certification. My company is just one of many that have seen the benefits of ATEX: there are now 10,000 IECEx-certified products in use, and the number of certificates issued  has increased six-fold in the last four years (reaching 1,500 in 2009). Simon Barrowcliff is the Director of the ATEX Notified Body at TRaC. He set up TRaC's Lancashire-based, ATEX business in 2002 and has been heavily involved in EX testing and compliance since then. Simon also runs TRaC's certification schemes for electrical safety under the IECEE CB scheme. John has been involved in regulatory testing and certification for 16 years. During this time he has run TRaC North West EMC lab and he took over as Radio Product Manager in September 2008. He has worked on all types of transmitter receivers and transceivers ranging from 600kW broadcast transmitters to 1nW short range devices, from both a regulatory and developmental point of view.
