Support schemes too 'common denominator' for tech start-ups?

One of the winners in the East of England Development Agency’s (EEDA) ‘running the gauntlet’ investment and education programme appears to have caught the eye of CSR co-founder Phil O’Donovan. That has to be a good endorsement.

Layered Sound Technologies of Cambridge has a method of using two types of loudspeakers - conventional cone and distributed mode (flat-panel) – to create a resulting sound that the firm says is more spacious.

Although the firm has not won any funding interest during the course of the EEDA’s programme, O’Donovan has offered to mentor company CEO Dr Katz.

The two firms that made the final that appear to have peaked the interest of VCs were an online estate agent and a natural pet food company. I get the feeling that firms with serious semiconductor technology spurn these sorts of programmes. Perhaps when you’ve been a PhD, a research scientist and then a founder of a start-up you are more likely to have the sort of self belief that takes you straight in the front door of 3i or Amadeus.
