ARM is 'invading the x86 MPU home turf' and is threatening Intel in PCs, desktop systems and servers, says Arizona analyst IC Insights, writes David Manners.

"The spread of ARM-based processors threatens to go beyond tablet computers and invade the x86 MPU turf in mainstream home PCs, desktop systems, and even network servers," says Bill McLean, CEO of IC Insights.

amd logo.jpgOne leading processor company that has been absent from recent Android talk is AMD... A senior executive has admitted that it has left the smartphone processor space to the likes of Intel and AMD. It seems AMD believes the company's strengths in graphics 'don't lend themselves to the handset segment,' reports PC World. Instead, it is Tablets that may attract them...

SVP and product group manager Rick Bergman has been talking at the Pacific Crest Securities Technology Leadership Forum in Vail, Colorado

Agam Shah writes:
One to note - Microsoft has signed a new licensing agreement for the ARM architecture, to get closer access to ARM IP.

Microsoft and ARM have worked together since 1997, on embedded, consumer and mobile devices, but the new agreement is intended to "extend the collaborative relationship between the two companies".

An interesting article on the x86 architecture, and reasons for its continued innovation, has been posted on the site - x86 processors buck R&D investment trend.

Brian Dipert, Senior Technical Editor of EDN, begins:
You might expect, therefore, that the semiconductor industry would mirror the broader economy's malaise; this scenario has indeed occurred in many technology and product sectors. The x86 CPU business has bucked the general trend, however, as continued R&D investment and resultant new-IC output demonstrate.
Phenom II logo.jpg
The Phenom range now has a "Black Edition". While being highlighted as AMD's fastest dual-core desktop processor to date, at 3.2 GHz, the Phenom II X2 555 is aimed "at budget-conscious consumer's Microsoft Windows 7 system platform".

Altogether five new 45nm processors have been released, updating AMD's Phenom II and Athlon II processor families. Three of which are priced sub-$100.

The company itemises them like this:
Intelheadquarters.jpgAn historic one to note: AMD drops case against Intel for $1.25bn

Intel and AMD today issued the same statement about a decision to end all outstanding legal disputes between the two companies, writes David Manners.

The joint statement reads:
Rick Bergman - AMD.jpg
One for hardcore followers of AMD cores... Spotted this on Nigel Dessau's AMD blog: tomorrow the company is webcasting its annual Financial Analyst Day from Santa Clara.

Why do we mention it? Well, AMD promises that Rick Bergman, AMD general manager (pictured) will take a "deep dive into our product and platform roadmaps".

Nigel Dessau writes:

One to note: AMD has announced eight new Athlon II processors, majoring on low power consumption, making them suitable for "sleek desktop PC designs and attractive price points," according to the company.

There are dual, triple and quad-core versions of the 45nm processors, with X2, X3 and X4 delineation.

You can read a review of the new chips on Tom's Hardware, The Guru of 3D and Xbit Labs.

AMD has announced - at the Embedded Systems Conference - what it describes as a "new enterprise-class embedded platform". A platform can be a very vague concept, at the best of times, and AMD has not elaborated very well.
"Seven AMD Opteron processors in three power bands, in conjunction with the new low-power chipset, allow high-end embedded vendors to enable increased performance-per-watt for edge-of-network systems such as telecom/datacom, storage, and security servers, and routers and switches," it's announcement declares.
AMD Athlon II X4.jpgAMD is boasting the first sub-$100 Quad-Core CPU with the release of the Athlon II X4 (dubbed a "budget Phenom II X4" by one reviewer).

To be precise, it is the X4 620, with a 2.6GHz core clock speed, and a X4 630, running at 2.8GHz, will appear later. The chip has 2MB of L2 cache, a 4000MHz HyperTransport bus, and uses the AM3 socket. Based on 1,000 unit quantities, it is priced at $99.

AMD VISION badge.jpgWhat do people (think) they want when they look at a computer's spec? On this topic, I've just read Nigel Dessau's AMD blog - A New Way to Buy PCs

Basically, after observing that "the truth is that little has changed in the way x86 processors are marketed" (factor in that he is chief marketing officer at AMD), he flags a new AMD approach to badging systems.

For a simple guide, see this website www.amd.com/whichvision.
AMD Processor Pricing snapshot.jpgAMD updated its processor pricing schedule at the end of August. For the record, here is a link to a snapshot of the prices.

I'll be making best efforts to track changes from this point.

(For any purposes of comparison, Intel processor pricing can be found here.)
AMD has introduced its six-core Opeteron offering, an EE processor - see Six-core AMD Opteron EE processor targets cloud computing

"Delivering up to 31% higher performance-per-watt over standard Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors, the Six-Core AMD Opteron EE processor is tailored to meet the demands of customers who need strong performance, but must trim out every watt possible in a server system and reduce the datacenter's power draw."
